John Lennon’s ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’; Piano, Bob Dylan Lyric Sheets Head to Auction

John Lennon's Sgt. Peppers era home piano, used by the Beatles legend to compose "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and "A Day in the Life," among others, is set to hit the auction block December 10th as the marquee item in Sotheby's "A Rock & Roll Anthology: From Folk to Fury."

The red-and-black John Broadwood and Sons cottage upright piano, which was housed in Lennon's Kenwood home when he was writing songs for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, is estimated to sell for between $1.2 and $1.8 million; Lennon's "Imagine" piano, featured on the 1970 classic, sold at auction for $2.1 million in 2000.

Lennon's Sgt. Pepper's piano comes with a plaque, installed by Lennon in 1971, denoting that the instrument was used to pen "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," "A Day in the Life," "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "Good Morning Good Morning."

 The "From Folk to Fury" auction also includes unique Bob Dylan items like the singer's autographed final manuscript for "Blowin' in the Wind," featuring Dylan's handwritten corrections and signature "Bob Dylan 1962."

Four handwritten versions of Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" are known to exist; the one hitting the block at Sotheby's, estimated to sell for between $300,000 and $500,000, is the July 1962 version used by Dylan to record The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan track.

Dylan and the Band's Rick Danko's typed manuscript for "This Wheel's on Fire," with handwritten edits presumably by Danko, will also hit the auction block with a $60,000 estimate. Sketches that Dylan drew of Joan Baez, as well as sketches Baez made of Dylan, are also available at the auction.

Other notable items include the Eagles' original, handwritten manuscript for "Hotel California," featuring lyrics penned by both Don Henley and Glenn Frey and estimated to sell for between $500,000 and $700,000.

Original paintings by David Bowie, a cache of Lou Reed's Velvet Underground lyrics, Jim Morrison's 1971 handwritten notebook, John Lennon's Help! jacket and Johnny Rotten's lyrics for the Sex Pistols' "Problems," penned on Malcolm McLaren's office stationary, will also be auctioned off.

2016 Nobel Prize In Literature Awarded To Bob Dylan

 

STOCKHOLM, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Bob Dylan, regarded as the voice of a generation for his influential songs from the 1960s onwards, has won the Nobel Prize for Literature in a surprise decision that made him the only singer-songwriter to win the award.

The 75-year-old Dylan - who won the prize for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition” - now finds himself in the company of Winston Churchill, Thomas Mann and Rudyard Kipling as Nobel laureates.

The announcement was met with gasps in Stockholm’s stately Royal Academy hall, followed - unusually - by some laughter.

Dylan’s songs, such as “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “The Times They Are a-Changin’,” “Subterranean Homesick Blues” and “Like a Rolling Stone” captured a spirit of rebellion, dissent and independence.

More than 50 years on, Dylan is still writing songs and is often on tour, performing his dense poetic lyrics, sung in a sometimes rasping voice that has been ridiculed by detractors.

Some lyrics have resonated for decades.

“Blowin’ in the Wind,” written in 1962, was considered one of the most eloquent folk songs of all time. “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” in which Dylan told Americans “your sons and your daughters are beyond your command,” was an anthem of the civil rights movement and Vietnam War protests.

Awarding the 8 million Swedish crown ($930,000) prize, the Swedish Academy said: “Dylan has the status of an icon. His influence on contemporary music is profound.”

Swedish Academy member Per Wastberg said: “He is probably the greatest living poet.”

Asked if he thought Dylan’s Nobel lecture - traditionally given by the laureate in Stockholm later in the year - would be a concert, replied: “Let’s hope so.”

Over the years, not everyone has agreed that Dylan was a poet of the first order. Novelist Norman Mailer countered: “If Dylan’s a poet, I’m a basketball player.”

Sara Danius, Permanent Secretary of the Nobel Academy, told a news conference there was “great unity” in the panel’s decision to give Dylan the prize.

Dylan has always been an enigmatic figure. He went into seclusion for months after a motorcycle crash in 1966, leading to stories that he had cracked under the pressure of his new celebrity.

He was born into a Jewish family but in the late 1970s converted to born-again Christianity and later said he followed no organized religion. At another point in his life, Dylan took up boxing.

Dylan’s spokesman, Elliott Mintz, declined immediate comment when reached by phone, citing the early hour in Los Angeles, where it was 3 a.m. at the time of the announcement. Dylan was due to give a concert in Las Vegas on Thursday evening.

Literature was the last of this year’s Nobel prizes to be awarded. The prize is named after dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel and has been awarded since 1901 for achievements in science, literature and peace in accordance with his will.

Sherry Khattak talks Music, Passion and Pakistan Music Industry

Here are his thoughts on Music, Life and More Music!

Tell us about your beginnings as an artist?

Well to be honest I never knew exactly when it all started for me, I remember being a music freak back in my school days, so much that I made a deal with my parents to buy me a guitar if I get good grades, and it all started from there.

What lead you to create your own band and work in the music industry?

Unlike others i was lucky to work in a studio right after i started music, So I was well aware of how to work in a studio, sooner I was fortunate enough to own my own studio and make music for myself.

Tell us more about your band?

Overdose has been a bit off the map these days, Since we all are now busy in Nescafe Basement 4, We have an English original in the pipeline that we'll be releasing right after the season ends.

Tell us more about the type of music you make, what inspires you?

I never tend to isolate myself under one specific genre or type of music, I love experimenting and Nescafe Basement has groomed me a lot in making music, If you see the original song I did in last season and the song I did this season you'll clearly see how I have improved in song writing and experimenting.

Have you worked with any other artists?

I have worked with alot of great names whom I always look up to, artists like Xulfi, Gumby, Omran Shafique, Meesha Shafi, Adeel Khurram and many others.

You also work as a producer, could you tell us more about that experience?

I love being in the studio, when I'm back in Karachi, I'm busy in my studio and when I'm here in Lahore I work as an assistant producer for Nescafe Basement, in short my whole year is spent in studio working and doing what I love.

Would you say that you are closer to fulfilling your dreams?

Well I guess I'm pretty close.

What are your thoughts on the kind of music playing today, in this day and age?

It's great! I have seen such great talent in the past few years, all we need now is a boost in the industry and I think music shows like Nescafe Basement and Coke Studio are playing a huge part in it.

What would you do or say to improve peoples’ perception of music?

I would listen more, and like we musicians experiment in music people should change there listening often, Try finding new bands and singers once in a while.

How has it been like to work on Nescafe Basement?

It has been life changing for me, this is my second season and every day I feel like I have improved, watching everyone and learning from them every year what more would anyone want.

Do you have any advice to give for the kids starting out and for those who are trying to make it in this industry?

I would say never give up, keeping at it is the key making good choices will always make you sustain in what you do.

Mountain Dew launches three new flavors at Pakistan’s first ever Electronic Music Festival

Lahore, 21 February, 2016: Mountain Dew Pakistan organized Pakistan’s first ever Electronic Dance Music Festival in Lahore featuring London’s No. 1 Dance and House Club ‘Ministry of Sound’ to launch three exciting new flavors Live Wire, Pitch Black and Blue Shock. The campaign is termed very aptly DEWmocracy since the brand is giving its fans the right to choose which flavor should become a permanent offering in the Dew portfolio. The high profile event was attended by many top celebrities including Umair Jaswal, Junaid Khan, Bilal Lashari, QB, Cybil Choudry, Ali Xeeshan and many more.

The event was a first ever of its nature, which took place on the outskirts of Lahore on 20th February. It was widely attended by the hip and chic from across the city and beyond. The festival’s main stage showcased various successful Pakistani DJs including Hira Tareen, El Safino, VIVID and Fake Shamans, with the main attraction being King Arthur from Ministry of Sound. Various other local DJs rocked three separate DJ Rooms with stages exclusively for each Dew flavor labeled as Live Wire, Pitch Black and Blue Shock. The guests tried all 3 flavors and then got a chance to vote for their favorite one.

Mountain Dew stands for originality - the aim of the brand was to promote its three new flavors in an innovative and unique approach which attracts its core audience. At the closing of the night, Lahoris were buzzing from the experience! One such attendee Bilal Latif said:

“I attended the event because it's Ministry of Sound! Mountain Dew really outdid itself with this event! I'm gonna vote for Blue Shock”

While another participant added,

“When I found out about the event and DEWmocracy I was intrigued because it's something new letting people decide which flavor they want to stay! Attending DEWxMOS was an awesome experience. A great fusion between the brand and its adventure seeking and exhilarating identity!”.

The launch event immediately went viral over the social media with its hashtags #Dewmocracy and #DEWxMOS. The online conversation engaged people from across the nation to receive live updates for several hours during the event.

I can't even imagine someone saying these things to me, or someone close to me. I know it makes me sound like an idiot, but why do we have to depend on someone to be loved?

We can love ourselves right?

We can be our Valentine. We can be immortals loving ourselves and consuming ourselves like the Auroboros. 

We would look in the mirror everyday and smile. Smile at the person with flaws and insecurities. I know it sounds cliche but what if you could look pass those horrible things in your past and you make it positive, redeem yourself. Be happy with who you are and let go of all things dragging you to hell and below.

We are broken people, trying too hard to fit in, making ourselves starve or over-eat because 'people' aren't happy with how we look, how we dress and how we feel.

Screw them. Screw them all.

We need to feel alive in our own skin and if we like eating, we should. If we like being bony, we should be able to. You are art.

Look like it.

Fall in love with yourself. Somehow.

Find a flaw, start loving more everyday. A bit everyday. I know this is boring. I know you get tired of the same movies, same blog posts same books same music, GOD NO.

Obviously it is all the same, This world is such a tiny place. We all look alike, we all feel the same feelings, love, hate, disgust, compassion, affection, pity, anger. So yes, the songs sound the same, the world looks the same, the blog posts are long and boring and yes the movies all have the same plot.

I know it may look like the world is ending, but its not. I am here. Everything is there, he cars, the buildings, the people, the endless line of events, art galleries, concerts, travels, money, books, they are all here, this world doesn't stop when someone dies, its selfish, but it is the truth, so why should your life stop because someone leaves? if they left you, it doesn't mean the word is dead. everything, EVERYTHING, is there for you, as if you never left too love a person who doesn't love you back or care for you or doesn't think you are beautiful. these things, these people, they belong to you, like they belong to everyone else, this air you breath, its yours, it belongs to your flaws. it belongs to your insecurities. so what if you feel sad when you listen to closer by Kings of Leon. but at the end of the song you can hear the music healing you, and you listen o that song on repeat and you know, this sting song makes sense too! all the storms hide under the skin of your flaws! love yourself to brig them out, to change the world, make the world known of your presence. that you matter, so the next time you leave, this world for someone else, it misses you, when you're gone.

But try to find that flaw and start to love it even if you don't.

Be yourself.

Try to look at things from a different perspective everyday. One day, imagine you were an artist, the other, being a musician.

Please, trust me. I know it will be weird but you can do it. Love yourself please.

I hate it when I am trying to write about things such as life, career, parents, friends, freedom, life and death…

But my entire mind agrees to talk about you.

I keep trying to rewrite what I have, remake what I am. And all I manage to think is how you are so content with happened to us, that you sleep just as perfectly fine as any other person. A person who isn’t in love, and why? Because you say that there is no time and space left for real love. So what am I supposed to do then? Cry?

I sure as hell have cried too much. Way too much, and I keep missing you. Not on big occasions, well yes on them too…but on little things. Like your favorite coffee…like your favorite place to eat and how you like to eat. Your disgust on things…and it makes me utterly allergic to that specific thing at once with no reason other than you, you alone. Every time I try and focus on things, you’re the one who sneaks inside my brain and corrupts it. Suddenly I want your hands wrapped around my waist. And your lips near my ears telling me to slow down. Because there is a coldplay song on the radio in your car; and you want us to be in that song.
